2007 VW Special Edition New Beetle Convertible

Saturday, April 21st –
I arrived back to Atlanta late last night and picked up my latest ride – the ’07 Special Edition VW New Beetle Convertible. My first thought was how interesting the timing was considering my quote in the NY Times last week. While that article mentioned my partner’s disdain for the MINI Cooper convertible because it’s overtly gay image, it also mentioned the New Beetle Convertible as a “gay” car. I am not sure which classifies as more ironic, the timing of my latest ride or the fact that my partner went out and bought a Mazda MX-5 last weekend. Hmmmm.

Oh yes, this is supposed to be about the car. The Special Edition New Beetle features the “Triple White” made so famous by the last generation VW Beetle drop tops. My first thought was why they called it “triple white” when the top is black. A quick read of the press release and I realized that it earns the name because it features a “unique Campanella white exterior, a white interior and a white convertible roof boot”. From the brief ride home from the airport last night, it feels just as solid and fun as the last New Beetle Convertible we tested. I’m off to run errands here in Atlanta. The weather is beautiful and I’m looking forward to dropping the top and scooting in this limited edition bug. Check back for more later……
For the record, Gaywheels.com doesn’t classify cars as “gay”. You can here me discuss this on XM’s “The Agenda”.

I used the new Triple White Beetle to run errands yesterday and today and it simply puts a smile on my face. With the boot on, it is especially eye-catching in its triple-white glory. It is one of the few vehicles that has gotten remarks neighbors as well as the folks at the car wash. It is hard to imagine the folks that deal with all the BMWs, Land Rovers and Saabs at the car wash in Midtown being impressed by much. Believe it or not, they flocked around when I dropped the top and put the white boot on. It is a nice, clean-looking color combination and in the near perfect weather we are having here in Atlanta, it is simply a joy to drive around.

I was worried the small size would limit my ability to get my chores done this weekend as I had Spring planting on the schedule. The white Beetle handled all my Home Depot plant purchases with nary an issue. The trunk isn’t huge but it was big enough to handle four trays of flowers. I can imagine a weekend’s worth of soft luggage for two wouldn’t be an issue at all. The rest of my landscaping supplies fit in the back seat and on the floorboard up front. Keep in mind that I would have been in trouble if I had any passengers but being that I was alone, I had little trouble making things fit. It is hardly a substitute for a wagon or SUV but my point is that there is usable room inside.

Last night was spent driving around putting up posters for our upcoming Modeling Audition here in Atlanta. The car is getting stares but then again, it could be that a big hairy guy is driving such a “cute” car. One friend actually laughed when he saw me in the driver’s seat. I suppose my size and look in the Triple White New Beetle Convertible is a “non sequitur”. At the end of the day, I enjoy driving the car and really don’t care much about what other people think. I only have a few more days with the Beetle and I hope to drive topless as much as possible. Wrap up to come.

Wednesday, April 25th –
They came and picked up “Blanca” today. Yes, I’ve been known to name my cars and although the Beetle convertible was only in my possession for 5 days, she had so much personality, I couldn’t resist. Judging from the looks I got at one of the local lunch hotspots for the boys, the public agrees. If you are in the market for a convertible that has a lot of personality and seats four, you should consider the new 2007 Triple White New Beetle Convertible. You better hurry though, this is a limited editon model and only 3,000 people in the U.S. will be able to bold enough to wear white all year – and look damn cute doing it.
2007 Triple White New Beetle Convertible is $25,990 with the standard automatic transmission.
