FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORLANDO, Florida-J “JJ” Sanchez, organizer of the Fireball Run, an annual 100 team Orlando to Los Angeles adventure rally, today announced the addition of the first-ever out gay team to participate in such a cross-country driving event.
As the first Hispanic and Generation X Chairman of the Orlando Regional Small Business Chamber, J. Sanchez understands the importance of diversity. “Diversity plays an important role in every aspect of the business community, so why shouldn’t it be the same in motorsports?”
Upon learning about the Fireball Run’s call for teams of diversity, Gaywheels.com founder Joe LaMuraglia requested one of the few remaining entries in the all-invitational rally. J. Sanchez accepted Joe’s application, and the first openly gay rally team officially registered July 3rd 2007.
“While Gaywheels.com’s primary mission is to educate lesbian and gay consumers on how gay-friendly automakers might be, we also relish the opportunity to show to the world that gays are as avid auto enthusiasts as anyone else,” said Joe LaMuraglia. “There’s no better way to do that then to take the checkered flag in this year’s Fireball Run.”
The number 53 “G.L.A.M.” team enters with the support of several major sponsors. The team consists of Atlanta-based Gaywheels.com CEO Joe LaMuraglia and SCCA southeast division champion Evan Darling of Miami, who recently placed 7th in the Homestead-Miami Speedway Grand-Am Cup race. “I can’t wait to get started and rip on the race tracks,” said Evan who has raced for 14 years.
“The Fireball Run is different. We look for character and class, both of which are found in every demographic-you simply make it clear they are welcome,” said J. Sanchez, an avid rally driver, retired Air Force Sergeant and entrepreneur. “Fireball Run is above labels and prejudices. Our players are worldlier, more sophisticated, and welcoming of strong competition from anyone who can bring it.”
