The Best, Most Fabulous Car Crash Ever: BUtterfield 8

It’s Friday and it’s the middle of August and everyone at every car company in America seems to have gone on vacation. Apart from a massive Volkswagen recall, there’s not much auto news to report.

Instead, I encourage you to feast your eyes on this clip that I posted to YouTube a few years ago. It’s from the 1960 film BUtterfield 8 starring Elizabeth Taylor, just before things went seriously downhill. (Cleopatra followed in 1963.) BUtterfield 8 is technically a drama, but this bit is comedy gold.

If you haven’t seen the movie, I won’t spoil it for you. All you really need to know is that Taylor plays a New York City hooker and drives a Sunbeam Alpine, which is involved in a very short, very strange crash. I don’t know of another on-screen auto accident that’s quite this fabulous, though the one from Mahogany is a close second.

Pay attention to the sound effects, too. I have no idea what those people were smoking. Or maybe I do.
