Last week’s 2013 Detroit Auto Show was a whirlwind of premieres and press conferences. Thankfully, the long, three-day weekend gave me time to reflect and choose some winners and losers of the lot.

Below, you’ll find my best-in-show list. Scroll to the bottom of the page for a full gallery — and stay tuned this afternoon for the, um, not so fortunate.

THE “YES, PLEASE-ES”

2014 Chevrolet Corvette

Behold: the new, 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. It’s still a Corvette, only now it wants you to mistake it for a Ferrari. Not a bad thing.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette looks great in person, with a much more sculpted and intricate design than the last generation C6. The rear is especially changed, as Chevy has ditched the ubiquitous circular taillights and replaced them with some highly three-dimensional units, compete with “crying chola” tear-drop tattoo vents on each side. They look far better than my description may make them seem. (Scroll down to see them in the gallery.)

The interior is also a vast improvement on the truly horrible, econo-car interior of the previous, C6. The new interior is focused toward the driver — fitting for a super serious sports car. In fact, the controls are SO canted toward the driver that Chevy has provided the passenger with her own adorable set of climate and seat controls right below the right hand air vent. Awwwww.

I DO take issue with Chevy calling this iteration of the Corvette a Stingray though. Using that hallowed name is going to make many a baby-boomer’s eyes pop-out with anticipation, so I’m sure it’s a smart marketing move; I’m just not convinced this design truly says “Stingray.”

One area in which you won’t be mistaking the Corvette for a Ferrari is the price. Expect this puppy to start around $50,000 when it goes on sale later this year, and THAT my friends is what I like to call American ingenuity.

2014 Cadillac ELR

The extended-range electric Chevy Volt was a great start but let’s be real: it lacked the glamour to really set people’s hearts afire. Of course debuting the Voltec technology on its mainstream brand was a deliberate move on GM’s part, seeking to make the point that the future of alternative propulsion was not going to be reserved for the rich.

Well, guess what, you patient rich people: your extended range electric car is finally here! Was it worth the wait? Well just look at it. Let me answer for you: YES. The ELR is a clear evolution of the current Cadillac design language, with sharp creases married to soaring, fluid shapes. It works really well on the ELR and gives this car the visual gravitas it needs to turn heads. Of course those stunning (and standard?!) 20-inch rims add to the feeling every time you glance at the ELR. Inside, the ELR expands on Cadillac themes we’ve seen as well, though the materials and execution seem even richer than in the lesser models.

In my heart of hearts, though I really wish Cadillac had called this an “El Dorado.” I know I’m going to get people yelling that that’s an old person’s name, but whatever. It was badass sounding then, and it’s badass sounding now.

BMW 4-Series Concept

Stylistically, BMWs are still recovering from the wounds wrought upon them by Chris Bangle. Squawk all you want: Bangle’s designs for the Bavarian performance powerhouse may have been interesting, but they certainly weren’t attractive. Thankfully, the brand has been making a recovery and the new 4-Series concept shows BMW is pushing its design back into the realms of attractiveness.

Interesting and muscular side-detailing fits the demeanor of this compact sport coupe concept. My only real concern here is with that face. It’s a bit gawky in person and leans a little too forward and down resulting in an awkwardly dorky gaze. Also: too bad about the interior, which is shared with the standard 3-Series sedan, making it a bit downmarket compared to the competition.

Still, this is a solidly attractive entry for BMW, something that has been sorely missing from this company in the past decade. More like this please.

Lincoln MKC Concept

The unveiling event for the Lincoln MKC was freaking bizarre. It was all pretty and nice until they opened the box containing the new crossover concept, and two young women emerged carrying long scarves covering the MKC Concept. It was like Cleopatra coming to Rome. Hopefully, unlike Cleopatra, the Lincoln MKC crossover won’t bring ultimate death and destruction to the the Ford empire. I certainly don’t think it will, because the Lincoln MKC Concept looks fantastic.

The MKC Concept offers a very clear glimpse of what the production Lincoln MKC crossover will look like when it hits the market in what I’m guessing will be about a year. A very well-conceived design, the Lincoln MKC includes a successful application of the brand’s new “flying” grill, as well as its newly re-adopted trademark full-width tail lights. So long as the proportions are maintained for production, Lincoln should have a winner on its hands. If Lincoln is smart, it’ll also include a hybrid version to entice some Lexus loyalists over to Lincoln-land.

Sidenote: I got the chance to speak with Soo Kang, the Korean born designer for the MKC (and MKZ) interior. She was a delight: funny, open, and genuinely excited about the product she help design. When asked about where the “champagne bubble” leather perforation pattern from the MKZ concept went in the production model, she assured me that she was working on something even cooler for the future that would indeed make it to production. Color me very intrigued.

Honda Urban SUV

The Honda Urban SUV Concept was a pleasant surprise at the show. Like it or not, Americans still have a taste for things called “SUV” and “crossover”, and Honda wants as big a piece of that pie as they can get. The Urban SUV Concept foreshadows what we can expect from their upcoming Fit-based crossover. It’s a pleasant little porker with clean styling and good proportions. Let’s hope they keep all of that for the production version.

You’re walking down a dark alley coyly looking for the door to a house of ill repute when a 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid stealthily sneaks up behind you. Its dark metallic paint is glimmering under the street lights. You couldn’t tell it was coming because its engine wasn’t running. It was in electric vehicle mode, slipping unheard through the night. It is eerie. It is creepy. And, it is a Lincoln.

This is not exactly what one expects from Lincoln, home of the Navigator, purveyor of all things Town Car, and imbued with the spirit of Continental. Lincolns aren’t exactly known for subtlety, what with their flashy chrome teeth, slab sides, and limousine stretches. You’ll shake your head a couple of times when I tell you this American luxury car is not only technological advanced, but it achieves 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway; quit wiping your eyes, you read it correctly.

The soul of this eco-gent is a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine that works in conjunction with batteries, electric motors, and regenerative brakes that recapture energy during deceleration. Full-on power nets 191 horsepower, but driven discreetly, the car can run on electricity alone up to 47 mph over short distances. Hybrids typically achieve better mileage in town because they can run on batteries more often. That also allows them to creep down dark alleys, looking for attendees to houses of ill repute.

To augment the aforementioned sorted affairs, the MKZ has a partial-LCD instrument cluster that communicates power usage, battery recharging, and gas mileage. There’s also a cool display in which leaves and flowers “grow” when the car is driven ecologically and disappear as the scourge of Gore when leaden feet apply. I’m happy to report that after traveling a duration of 400 miles, I have grown a full bouquet.

Even with all of this high-tech gadgetry, there is plenty of old-world Lincoln luxury inside the MKZ Hybrid. Seats are trimmed in Bridge of Weir™ leather, known for its refined grain, just like the ’56 Continental. Front buckets are heated and cooled and enjoy a view of genuine wood trim on the dash and doors. Blind spot warnings and a rear view camera keep everybody safe while Lincoln SYNC® serves up voice-activated audio and navigation. iPods can be connected to the car’s controls through a USB port while Bluetooth links to cell phones, and the theatre-quality THX speakers are Lucas-worthy.

There’s nothing but discreet Hybrid badges on the MKZ’s decklid and doors to reveal this car’s inner soul. If you want a flashy, look-what-I-bought hybrid, go shop the Lexus HS250h. Most MKZ drivers will be thrilled that they enjoy obscene fuel economy while slipping by unnoticed, especially since most have no interest in driving an arcade of buzzers and video screens. The car’s shape is Euro-conservative, but delights with a “bow wake” grille inspired by the ’40 Continental, wide rectangular taillamps from the ’61 Continental, liberal use of chrome, and 17” alloy wheels that derive more from a SEMA show than anything ever displayed by a Continental. Should you want to dispense with the shady alley slinking and arrive like a movie star, puddle lamps built into the side mirrors light the way.

Long drives are required for appreciating the attention to detail in the MKZ. That Bridge of Weir leather from Scotland is milled for up to 12 hours, and uses a chromium-free tanning process so it feels buttery to the behind and can be easily recycled. Interior sounds are reduced via an acoustic laminated windshield, as well as body and door seals that help to squelch wind noise. Lincoln further banishes unwanted noise with expandable stuffers in the fenders and pillars, an acoustic headliner, and damping material on the floor to defend against road rumble. The result is a hybrid so serene you’ll barely know it is a hybrid.

If this is what the new federal mandates produce, then praise Nader, build a temple to the EPA, and bring on more mandates! Lexus didn’t see this one coming, but it is about to know where the MKZ has been as the hybrid is currently taking 25% of MKZ sales. The MKZ Hybrid’s foes cover a broad spectrum, and include the Buick LaCrosse with eAssist, the Mercedes-Benz E450 Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Pricing for the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid start at $34,330, but our test car, equipped with navigation, blind spot warning, rear view camera, and rear cross traffic alert systems, top out closer to $39,000. If you’re comparing cars, that’s the same price as a non-hybrid V6-powered MKZ. I didn’t want it to slip by you.

At first glance, the MKT looked like its designers tossed every historic Lincoln design cue into a plastic bucket, shook it 23 times, and tossed it at the closest clay model in the studio. We got a stylized version of the iconic ’40 Continental’s grille, sharp shoulders and stepped beltline from the ’61 Continental, and the rear lights of a ’93 Mark VIII. I thought it was big-time fugly – time for Lincoln to gather its pieces. Turns out, they are pretty stylish pieces, and after further reflection, the MKT is quite right.

Back in 1960, as Lincoln director of design Eugene Bordinat was imagining his division’s next model, he knew there was a problem. Since the end of World War II, Lincoln had sold three generations of cars that looked like they could have come from three different automakers. This was in direct contrast to Cadillac that maintained a consistent design theme of eggcrate grilles, formal rooflines, and tailfins. As a result, Cadillac was the envy of rock stars while Lincoln was just another plush car. Designer Elwood P. Engel had just the cure.

The 1961 Continental, best known as President Kennedy’s final ride, was stunning and couldn’t have been more distinguished. When Cadillacs flaunted high fins, excessive chrome, and obscene exuberance, Lincoln was refined, understated, and elegant. Chromed razor edges and stepped shoulderlines became Lincoln design hallmarks.You can see a lot of the Continental’s side profile in the MKT.

Another influence for the MKT, especially in the bow-wake grille, is the 1940 Continental that was announced in October, 1939. Originally shaped by E. T. “Bob” Gregorie for Edsel’s winter home in Florida, the car became an icon when the younger Ford ordered into production. It eventually begat the ’56 Continental, which was over-seen by Edsel’s son, William Clay Ford.

With two Continentals as examples, MKT designers apparently had an infatuation with the ’93 Mark VIII’s expansive taillamp band and humped rump. On the MKT, the rear hatch flows right to the bumper with the fully-integrated look of a concept car. A button on the key fob opens up the cavernous interior.

Gone is the cool Continental-inspired twin-dash design from recent Lincolns, and it its place, is a curvaceous suave zone with a fluid dash, LED white lighting, glistening analog instruments, and Panoramic Vista Roof that lets sun shine on front and rear seats. Seven-passenger cabins are available, but most regal-minded mini-potentates should go for the center-row heated/cooled captain’s chairs with center console that includes a cooler. Third-row seats are completely power stowable with switches inside the rear hatch.

None of immortal Lincoln stylists could have imagined the technology suite that would come to their progeny decades hence. THX II® 5.1 audio via 14 speakers drenches with a freight train of sound – best enjoyed from Sirius Satellite Radio or from your iPOD through the USB port. MKT comes standard with Ford’s SYNC® voice-activated audio/nav/weather interface. Bluetooth connects cell phones to the vehicle’s controls while safety is enhanced by an array of airbags, Collision Warning with Brake Support (automatically slows the vehicle), radar cruise control, and blind spot warning. The MKT can even parallel park itself.

No matter the technology, MKT’s powertrain will chuck the bonanzas at lesser wagons. Entry-rung MKTs could whip a Continental’s elegant flanks with its 268-HP 3.7-litre V6 engine. However, to put Hot Rod Lincolns back on the trailer, check off the 355-HP 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6. As part of Ford’s product line greening, no V8s are available in the MKT. Fuel economy is rated 17/23-MPG.

Lincoln engineers looked to Sweden, borrowing much from the large Volvos. A four-wheel independent suspension system, speed-variable electric power steering, and available all-wheel-drive provide a smooth and secure ride. On the highway, the crossover feels tidy, hugging passengers in a womb of serenity.

The MKT looks American, drives European, and spoils like a Hong Kong hotel. Still a little controversial, the MKT is at least recognizably Lincoln, conveying a sense of understated luxury from first glance to the last mile. Gregorie, Bordinat, Engel, and even Edsel himself would likely approve. Lincoln has gathered its pieces, causing Cadillac, Lexus, Infiniti, and Mercedes to take notice. Prices start at $44,200 or $49,200 with EcoBoost.

Taking iPhone-like technology to the automotive console, MyLincoln Touch allows you to engage your car like you've never imagined before. Forget about buttons, just wave your hand and flick your wrist - two motions that should come easily to big queens who want to command their cars like kings.

If Lincoln gets your attention,
pressing buttons may soon be a relic of the last decade. Taking iPhone-like technology to the
automotive console, MyLincoln Touch allows you to engage your car like you’ve
never imagined before. Forget about
buttons, just wave your hand and flick your wrist – two motions that should
come easily to big queens who want to command their cars like kings.

Beginning with the 2011 MKX,
Lincoln will introduce its new touch-sensitive technology that allows drivers
and passengers to operate the climate control and audio by moving their fingers
across a bar on the center console. You
can intuitively adjust fan speeds or audio volume by either sliding your
finger, or giving it a quick three swipes to attain maximum output. Once a feature is selected, it is highlighted
by amber lighting. Lincoln’s crisp white
lighting shines when the option is not engaged.

The technology that makes all of
this possible is pretty cool. Touch
cells, similar to what’s used on touch screens, create an undetectable electric
field that, when broken by a finger, goes on and off like a switch. Engineers have even tested to make sure
gloved fingers will work just fine. An
audible “beep” lets you know the system has complied with your wishes.

Besides volume and fan speeds, MyLincoln Touch
controls the radio seek, station tuning, CD track, defrosters, and
air-conditioning. The system also allows
you to save favorite interior temperature like a radio preset to serve multiple
drivers.

To accompany all of the touch
tech, Lincoln gave the MKX a thorough facelift for 2011. Head-on, the front dispenses with its classic
’60s-style mesh grille and adopts the brand’s new signature “bow wake” theme
that is based on the ’40 Continental.
Accentuated “cycle” front fenders, LED taillamps, and custom stitched
interior materials stay true to Lincoln’s tradition of craftsmanship. All that and a new 305-HP 3.7-litre V6 engine
make life much tougher for the Lexus RX and Cadillac SRX.

Read why the 2011 Lincoln MKX was one of our Top 5 from the 2010 Detroit Auto show

“The
2011 Lincoln MKX is a marvelous high-tech showcase, especially with the
addition of MyLincoln Touch driver connect technology,” said Sonya Nematollahi,
driver information and electronic finish panels engineering supervisor. “Integrating our unique driver connect
technology with touch-sensitive technology creates a customer experience not
offered by any competitor.”

MKX has always been an elegantly designed crossover
The Detroit Auto Show) earlier this week as a guest of General Motors. As always it is great to start off a new year with my "other family" of journalists, PR pros and automotive executives at what I call the mother church of the auto industry - Detroit. As usual, we choose the Top 5 new vehicle introductions from gay-friendly companies. My picks for this year are the 2011 Lincoln MKX, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet, the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, the 2011 Ford Focus and the 2011 Honda CR-Z.

The 2011 Lincoln MKX that debuted at the 2010 Detroit Auto show is the latest Lincoln to undergo a styling update. It is not an all-new vehicle but the styling enhancements are significant. The entire front end is new and it brings the MKX up-to-date with the Lincoln design language – for better or for worse. Actually, the Lincoln grill is growing on me and while not as elegant as the MKZ, the new schnoz on the MKX is distinctive and gives it an entirely new character. The rear of the MKX has been redesigned as well.
The biggest news concerning the MKX is the new elegant interior featuring the first application of MyLincoln Touch – a system of electronics that allow owners to customize the features and information shown on the dash and in the center screen. The system is not only slick, it makes a LOT of sense as the majority of the owners of the MKX will be older and less comfortable with the massive amounts of information available. They can simply opt to show just the basic information. For those of us who want it all, a few clicks of the controls and you have all the information you want displayed beautifully on the dashboard.
The 2011 MKX features a new 3.7-liter V-6 mated to a six-speed SelectShift Automatic™ transmission. It pumps out 305 HP and helps the MKX get up to 25 MPG on the highway.

But a tiny paycheck doesn’t have to put the kibosh on your good time, because for around $16K, you can still roll up to the club in a stylish little number called the Soul. iPod integration, Bluetooth for your cell phone and even speakers that match the beat of your music with pulsating red LED lighting are all features that belie this car’s miniscule price point. Match the Alien Green paint to the black and sand Houndstooth cloth interior, and you’re rolling in the modern day equivalent of your Grand Daddy’s Cadillac Eldorado. Now that’s Pimpin’ Korean style.

Nick Kurczewski – Bentley Continental Supersports

It’s not often you can justify 621-horsepower with Earth-friendly credentials. The Continental Supersports is the most powerful Bentley road car, ever! That’s saying quite a lot. Now as if that fun factoid wasn’t enough, this $267,000 supercar also happens to be the first Bentley capable of running on clean-burning bio-fuels, such as E85 ethanol. Will anyone really buy this car for its green image? Absolutely not. But I still love it.

Casey Williams – 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS

A hot young homo shouted in his best Texas accent, “That shit is pimp!” That shit was indeed pimp. But, the new SLS with its chrome Lonestar grille, long hood, and short rear deck is even more pimp. When you and your guest pop open the gullwing doors at the valet stand, I promise red carpets. Nothing makes an entrance like this Mercedes-Benz.

The 2010 Lincoln MKT looks like nothing else on the road, features seating for 6 in limo-like comfort, an AMAZING THX stereo system and an optional refrigerator to keep certain beverages cold for the ride. Choose the Lincoln MKT with the twin-turbo EcoBoost engine – the 355 horsepower will outrun the paparazzi in no time!

Thursday, June 25, 2009 – I’ll be driving the new 2010 Lincoln MKZ sedan as well as the all-new 2010 Lincoln MKT Crossover today and will be using Twitter to update the site with my driving impressions. The action should start around 9 AM EST. You can check in here during the day to read all the tweets below or you can follow me on Twitter HERE and read as I post.
The 2010 Lincoln MKT Crossover features the new “EcoBoost” turbocharging technology that Ford is launching this year in key products like the Flex, Taurus SHO and the Lincoln MKS and MKT. Ford claims that EcoBoost gives the Fuel Economy of a V6 with the performance of a V8. I’m looking forward to experiencing it first hand.

The New Face of Lincoln

by Joe LaMuraglia

Lincoln used to be known for what we called “land yachts”. You know, those massive Continentals from the ’60s and 70s that floated down the road with little road feel and slightly more control from the steering wheel than a rudder on a Hatteras Yacht. They tried to change their image with better product in the latter part of the century be outside of gaudy SUVs, the younger buyers didn’t even consider a Lincoln. With the introduction of the new 2009 MKS, Lincoln hopes to attract younger buyers with a new brand image that went to boarding school in Europe and got a new wardrobe and driving manners along the way.

Lusciously Lincoln
The first thing you notice when you approach the new 2009 Lincoln MKS is that it doesn’t really look like a Lincoln at all. It has strong European styling cues (the taillights look like they came from a Quattroporte) and is seems shorter than its predecessors. It is tall and substantial with clean understated sides adorned by distinctive styling cues front and rear.
If you took the Lincoln emblem off the front and back it would be a challenge to identify the brand – and that is a good thing. With the Lincoln design team launching the MKS as the first example of their new design language, they needed more than a simple evolution. Truth be known, the new MKS has a lot in common with Lincolns of yore – just not ones that their target market will be familiar with. The double-wing grille that forms the face of the Lincoln is heavily inspired by a 1941 Lincoln Continental (think the grandfather of the car in Entourage).

A Strong Quiet Type
A new image requires new muscle and the MKS comes out of the box with a 3.7 V6 engine delivering 273-horsepower through a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is smooth and relatively quiet but it could use a little bit more power. The chassis is quite good and handled the winding roads outside of Washington, D.C as if it were a much smaller vehicle yet you could feel the engine straining against the weight of the MKS. Lincoln promises a more powerful twin-turbo, “Eco-Boost” in Ford speak”, V6 sometime during the 2009 model year.
While we car geeks like to compare numbers and make critiques like the one above, it is important to consider the target customer for this car. The traditional Lincoln buyer will most likely be happy with the performance of the MKS and they will revel in the incredibly quiet cabin and luxurious appointments offered. If Lincoln wants to attract import buyers and even get on the list of Cadillac CTS and STS intenders, then they need to pony up some more oomph.

Tons of Technology
An area where Lincoln product planners did an excellent job is in the area of incorporating technology. In addition to the bevy of electronics that help keep you from having an accident (stability control (AdvanceTrac),and available AWD) there are a multitude of technologies to protect you in the event of an accident. Those are cost of entry for the luxury segment. What Lincoln has done well is differentiate itself by offering excellent technologies like Sync – their voice-activated hands-free in-car communications and entertainment system. Another Ford/Lincoln exclusive is their next generation navigation system with SIRIUS Travel Link. Want to see if there is traffic on the route ahead? Check. Need to find the local weather? Check. Want to find the cheapest gasoline along the route? Check. Need to check sports scores and movie times. Check. Check. The last three features are exclusive to Ford/Lincoln for now and are an excellent example of integrating technology to make your life easier.
Music for Your Soul
I was impressed by the Lincoln MKS but thought that few of its features really make it stand out. It does a lot of things really well but many of its competitors do it better. Where the Lincoln got me and grabbed by the fiber of my soul was its THX II Certified 5.1 Surround Sound Audio System. Words cannot explain how good this system is. I loved it in the Navigator we tested a few years ago but the latest iteration in the MKS is almost enough to make me buy this car. If you love your music, take a CD, MP3 player or USB device and drive to your Lincoln store just to experience it. I promise, it is worth it.

On Your MKs, Get Set….

….and go down to your Lincoln dealer? Well, that depends. If you love your sports sedans and want an American version of a 5 series, don’t even think about it. The MKS doesn’t pretend to play that game and will disappoint you. However, if you don’t dream of the racetrack and want a distinctive American luxury car with some unique technology and one of the best stereos in the business, you should stop by your Lincoln store. Don’t forget to bring your music!
Listed in alphabetical order they are: Chrysler, Ford, GM, Subaru, Toyota and VW.

Subaru, in concert with their long-standing support of the LGBT community, is not surprising. Some might be taken back by the other companies on the list as well as those that didn't achieve a perfect score.

9/2/2008 – The Human Rights Campaign Foundation just released its 2009 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) and 6 of the 259 major U.S. businesses that scored a top rating of 100 percent are automotive manufacturers. Listed in alphabetical order they are: Chrysler, Ford, GM, Subaru, Toyota and VW.
Subaru, in concert with their long-standing support of the LGBT community, put out a release announcing their standings.
“We are very proud to accept this recognition. Due to the diverse insights, talents and perspectives our employees contribute, we have built a culture that is cohesive in operation, strong at heart and a company where our employees work with pride,” said Tomohiko Ikeda, chairman, president and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “Together we hope to create a reputation of distinction, service and respect.”
This is Subaru’s second year with a perfect score and the fourth year that they’ve taken part in the CEI.
While one would expect a brand like Subaru to be on the list, many are surprised to see companies from Detroit ranking so highly. Ford, GM and Chrysler all implemented same-sex domestic partner benefits in January 2000 and have remained competitive with each other in terms of workplace equality. Of the three though, GM has been the most progressive lately in terms of its outreach to the LGBT community.
“GM, with its eight U.S. brands, is pleased to continue its long-standing tradition of achieving a perfect HRC score because it’s the equality with which we treat our employees that legitimizes our outreach to LGBT consumers,” said Travis Parman, LBGT Media Relations Manager for GM. “This also supports our LGBT employees’ efforts to be excellent ambassadors of our vehicles and customer service experience.”
Where’s My Brand?
The CEI is a voluntary rating system and as a result, not all manufacturers chose to take part in the ranking. Nissan is the only other automaker included in the index and has a score of 50. Other automotive related companies (and their scores) are: Carmax, Inc. (100), Visteon (100), Bridgestone Americas Holding Inc.(80), Delphi Corp. (45), Cooper Tire & Rubber (33), Dana Holding Corp. (20), Lear Corp. 20.
Gaywheels.com ranks brands as gay-friendly if they offer same-sex domestic partner benefits to their U.S.-based employees. For a listing of the gay-friendly brands, click HERE
The 2009 CEI can be downloaded <a href="http://www.hrc.org/documents/HRC_Corporate_Equality_Index_2009.pdf" target=blank">HERE

About the CEI
The seventh annual CEI rates 583 businesses on a scale from 0 to 100 percent on their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees, consumers and investors. The 2009 edition of the CEI reports 259 businesses achieved a perfect score, a one-third increase over last year when the number was 195. The 259 top-rated businesses collectively employ more than 9 million full-time employees. These workers are protected from employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression because of their employers’ policies on diversity & inclusion, training, health care, and domestic partnership benefits.

By Joe Tralongo
The automobile industry spends millions of dollars researching the average consumer’s needs during various life stages. Depending on our age and position in life, our cars say a lot about us, our desires and the image we wish to project. Of course, we of the homosexual persuasion have a slightly different set of needs and paths than our straight counterparts. Below is a list of vehicles that we at Gaywheels.com feel suit the four primary phases of gay life. Mind you, this list represents a random sampling from a broad field of outstanding automobiles, but as space is limited we’ve chosen a few standouts worthy of attention.
Stage 1: Young, Single and On the Prowl
At this stage in your gay life, it’s all about YOU! Forget backseat legroom and trunk space, you need a car that attracts attention. The following vehicles are sure to draw onlookers (and maybe a date or two) without cutting too deeply into your budget.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/Volvo_C30.JPG" alt=“2008 Volvo C30"/>

2008 Volvo C30 – Small, agile and starting well under $25,000, the C30’s groovy good looks and nearly infinite color/trim/option combinations (it’s like driving a rolling Benetton sweater) practically guarantee no two neighborhood cars will be quite the same.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/Wrangler_side_view_300x200.jpg" alt=“2008 Jeep Wrangler"/>

2008 Jeep Wrangler – The Wrangler is one of the few vehicles that can show up at a rodeo or on Rodeo Drive and still look right at home. Available in two- or four-door models with a removable hard or soft top and just the right blend of hip styling and butchness, the Jeep Wrangler always wins unwavering approval.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/InfinitiG376.jpg" alt=“2008 Infiniti G37"/>

2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe – The G37 is not as economically priced as the others in this group. If you can swing the payments, however, the sensuous new Infiniti Coupe not only has the power to start hearts fluttering, it also telegraphs this is one single not looking for a Sugar Daddy (or Momma, as the case may be).
Stage 2: The Coupling Period
Congratulations, you’ve become a “we”! Love now requires one of you to make the ultimate sacrifice by giving up the sporty little car. But driving a four-door vehicle doesn’t instantly make you uncool. Gaywheels is confident these models will help you project a strong sense of style, as well as provide enough room for a weekend road trip or an evening out with friends.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/2008_Cadillac_CTS_studiofront_header.jpg" alt=“2008 Cadillac CTS"/>

2008 Cadillac CTS – Who says gays don’t do domestic? Cadillac’s beautifully sculpted CTS sedan displays a strong presence with even stronger performance. We love the new interior and the seats are some of the best in the business. With a choice of two V6s, RWD or AWD, and a manual or automatic transmission, you can get one that fits just right.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/07LincolnMKX_header.jpg" alt=“2008 Lincoln MkX"/>

Lincoln MKX –Not much bigger than most sedans, the MKX’s wide hatch provides a bit more versatility than the others in this group, yet gives up nothing in the areas of luxury, ride and handling. And our favorite option, the Vista glass moonroof, brings the outdoors inside.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/07PassatWagon.jpg" alt=“2008 VW Passat"/>

Volkswagen Passat – The Passat may not have a status symbol badge bolted to its grille, but nothing in the family sedan class matches its combination of price, features and Audi-like interior. The 2.0-liter turbo engine pulls like a V6, yet sips fuel to the tune of 29 miles per gallon (highway). The Passat is also offered in wagon form.
Stage 3: Partnered for Life (a.k.a. Married Without Benefits)
You now dress alike and regularly finish each other’s sentences; you share a mortgage, a cocker spaniel and a penchant for weekend shopping sprees. In other words, you’re hitched. Whether hauling a bulky antique armoire, 50-pounds of landscape fodder or the makings of your first nursery, you needn’t give up charisma for capability.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/2008_mbz_GL550_header.jpg" alt=“2008 Mercedes-Benz GL"/>

Mercedes-Benz GL – Big enough to seat seven, yet nearly identical in width to the smaller ML, Mercedes-Benz’s newest SUV offers excellent maneuverability and a luxurious interior. Also, the GL’s logically laid out controls don’t require an extra set of eyes and hands to operate.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/2008 Enclave header.jpg" alt=“2008 Buick Enclave"/>

Buick Enclave – If you like curves, you’ll love the Enclave’s seductive exterior styling. Buick may not have scored high on your car-buying list in the past, but this seven-passenger crossover SUV will quickly remedy that! Vivid sew patterns, a one-of-kind dashboard and a liberal use of ambient lighting conspire to create one beautiful interior.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/08MY_Tribeca_header.jpg" alt=“2008 Subaru Tribeca"/>

Subaru Tribeca – Long regarded for its dependable all-wheel-drive systems and quirky styling, Subaru moves toward the mainstream with its largest family vehicle to date, the Tribeca. Optional seating for seven, a powerful new V6 engine and plenty of electronic toys to keep the munchkins happy make the Tribeca a favorite of gay families everywhere.
Stage 4: The Golden Years
You’ve survived the seven-year itch—nine times, possibly raised a kid or two and still managed a very comfortable retirement. Now comes the time to throw caution to the wind and treat yourself to something sinful. Show up at the theatre in one of these cars and everyone will know you and your partner have truly arrived.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/2008_Audi_A5.jpg" alt=“2008 Audi A5"/>

Audi S5/A5 –Audi’s latest work of art is to be enjoyed by the driver and occasionally a lucky passenger or two. The first true four-passenger coupe offered by Audi in nearly 15 years, the rocket-fast S5 lands in showrooms this fall, followed by the more affordable A5 in the spring.

<img src="http://www.gaywheels.com/images/gaystages/XK_Front.jpg" alt=“2008 Jaguar XK Convertible"/>

Jaguar XK Convertible –Going topless never felt so liberating. The XK’s intoxicating good looks will have all eyes pointed in your direction, and with the convertible top retracted you can drink in equal servings of vitamin D and envious admiration.

Lexus LS 600h L – Al Gore promises we will pay a price for not going green, but who’d have guessed the price is even higher for combining luxury and environmentalism? Starting at a mere $104,000, the Lexus LS 600h L (the h stands for hybrid) is more a low-emission speed demon with a slightly green hue than a luxury Prius.

Purple People Eater

by Joe LaMuraglia

Summer means different things to different people. In my youth, summer meant trips to the beach in North and South Carolina; days riding waves, drinking beer and basking in the moisture-laden sunlight. Alas, adulthood brought responsibility, geographic changes and a serious time deficit that has kept me from the beloved shore of the Carolinas. So when the stars aligned and a rare family beach trip was planned for my mother’s 80th, I jumped at the chance to spend 5 days will all 28 of my closest family members. The lucky chariot for the trip was the 2007 Lincoln MKX.

When the MKX arrived, two things crossed my mind: “damn, a black car in the heat of June” and “why the hell doesn’t it have a sunroof???” Ah, the inner voice of a auto-journalist can be so bitchy at times. Truth be told, I was looking forward to testing out Lincoln’s newest addition to their lineup, despite the hue and solid roof. The irony was – my inner bitch was quick to judge.

Not until we loaded the MKX with all of our gear did my twin sisters and I realize two things: First, it didn’t just have a sunroof, it had a massive panoramic glass roof that opened up over both rows of seats. The roof and color combination fooled even my seasoned eye. Secondly, this roomy crossover that engulfed all three of our less-than-petite frames wasn’t black but a deep purple! It wasn’t long that we dubbed it the Purple People Eater.
The six-hour ride to the coast from Atlanta couldn’t have been much more comfortable. All seating positions were cozy and the front seats were equipped with one of my favorite inventions – built in air conditioning. They came in handy as the digital thermometer inched towards three digits but in the end, they didn’t cool as well as others I’ve tested. The rear seats, while not climate-controlled, received rave reviews from my former basketball-playing sisters. Leg room is generous and the design allows for easy entry and exit.

Our favorite feature besides the massive sunroof and cooled seats was the THX stereo system. If you enjoy music, it simply can’t be beat for the price. There are better systems offered by Audi and Lexus but we haven’t experienced anything in this price range that can touch it. We re-lived some old memories via music and the crisp, clear tunes filled the void when we ran out of things to talk about.
Awesome tunes, comfortable seats, great light and visibility – what more could you want? How about a nice ride? The Lincoln delivers a beautifully smooth ride and that would never be called athletic. This vehicle is all about comfort and cruising. If you want sporty, “european” handling, walk away. If you like an American-luxury ride that is controlled and comfortable, the MKX delivers. Add to that good acceleration, decent passing power and a generous cargo area and you have an altogether pleasant on-road package.

Likes:
•	Unique styling
•	Awesome Panoramic Sunroof. Beautifully integrated into the roof
•	The THX stereo simply rocks. Must have if you are an audiophile
Dislikes:
•	Turning radius is large
•	No manual mode for transmission – not good for control freaks
•	Feels really heavy
•	HVAC controls are not easy to use

A Zephyr By Any Other Name Would Smell As Sweet

by Joe LaMuraglia

For those Shakespeare afficianados out there, my apologies for butchering one of his famous lines. Believe it or not, coming up with pithy titles for these posts is a lot harder than it seems! Luckily, the idea behind the chosen title is appropriate for this vehicle. Juliet was telling Romeo that it matter not what his surname was, she still loved him dearly. In the case of the 2008 Lincoln MKZ, it applies to the fact that just last year, this vehicle was called the Zephyr and despite the sudden nomenclature games at Ford Motor Company it is still a good car. How good will be revealed during our week-long blog entry.

Friday, June 8th – We’ve had a few days with the 2007 Lincoln MKZ so far and it is exceeding my expectations. Having spent a brief period of time in the Zephyr last year, I was left less than satified with the power delivery and the styling. Lincoln fixed both issues and more with a new, more powerful 3.5L V-6 engine, a newly designed front end, more traction with available all-wheel drive and a new name – MKZ. In the few jaunts around East Atlanta to run errands, it feels solid, peppy and it is getting more than its fair share of stares on the road. I’m heading out on my weekly trek to Nashville to see the man. I’m looking forward to checking out its road manners and the optional THX II-Certified ® audio system. Check back in a few days for more.

Sunday, June 10th – When will I ever learn that it is NOT a good idea to try to leave Atlanta at 4 PM on a Friday? My addiction to work and absolute requirement of a Starbucks to go delayed my departure time on Friday. It started out great but 75 North quickly became a parking lot and the MKZ and I spent quality time together inching towards Nashville. When this happens, and it does all too often lately, I take the time to play with the gadgets in the car. With the MKZ it was testing out the air-conditioned seats and searching for my favorite shows on Sirius. The former are a must-have if you like leather and live anywhere warm. They didn’t cool as quickly as others I’ve tested but most companies don’t even offer them on a car in the price range. I’ve experienced Sirius before but was disappointed in the user interface on the Lincoln. When you pack a AM/FM radio, 6-cd changer, navigation, satellite radio and vehicle control menus into one unit user-friendliness will inevitably suffer but this unit is more frustrating than most. At least the THX II audio system rocked with the few CDs I brought along.

Once I broke out of the gridlock, I opened her up and got down to business. The new 263 hp engine is certainly an improvement over the one it replaced and matched with a very nice 6-speed transmission the MKZ had no problem getting ahead of traffic and staying there. The ride was smooth and the handling controlled. It is not a sports sedan in the vein of an Infiniti G35 or BMW 3-series but rather a entry-level luxury sedan with a hint of sporty thrown in. The MKZ handled beautifully and I felt more confident knowing that the optional AWD was there if I needed it. I averaged 24 MPG on the trip to Nashville. That is impressive considering it is rated at 26 MPG on the highway and I was hardly driving slow.

We have guests in from Boston and our itinerary included a trip to the Jack Daniels distillery about 1.5 hours from Nashville. I thought it would be an excellent test of passenger capacity and handling fully loaded. As 3 of the four of us are larger than the average person, I expected it to be snug but didn’t anticipate the complaining that the rear seating brought forth. While the front seats are pleasant place to spend time, the rear seats didn’t pass muster with our guests. Complaints included cramped leg room and seat belts that cut across your neck if you are tall. Even the shortest of the passengers at 5’2″ commented on the snug fit. Lesson: don’t buy the MKZ if you expect to haul larger passengers in the rear seat – especially if they are opinionated New Englanders. Happily, the handling and ride didn’t suffer at all when fully loaded. I’ll be heading back to Atlanta in the morning and will write a wrap up soon after.

Tuesday, June 12th – The ride back to the ATL was uneventful and that is a good thing. As much as I make this trip, I’ve come to learn the road rather well and know where certain warts will show in a vehicle. The MKZ handled the trip beautifully and delivered a indicated 26 MPG on the ride home. Considering I don’t drive the speed limit and our test car was the AWD version, I was very impressed. I can’t say enough about the THX stereo system. Once you figure out the Sirius radio controls, you can listen to your favorite music delivered beautifully. It really comes alive when you put your favorite CD in and crank the volume. Yes, I was in concert most of the way home.

Here is where I give my overall impression. Being a car geek and having spent years in the industry, it is easy to be negative and point out things that are up to my liking. But that isn’t what this is about. The question is; does this car deliver to its intended target customer? The answer to that is yes. If you are in market for a stylish luxury sedan that sits between the pure isolation of a Lexus E350 and the performance-oriented BMW 3-Series at a lower price, you should test drive the new MKZ. It may have changed its name, gotten a nose job and beefed up at the gym but Juliet would still be impressed.

Likes

- Very attractive new front end

- New engine delivers on performance and economy

- Available AWD at an affordable price for this segment

Dislikes

- The A/C seats are a great feature but don’t cool as well as those from other companies

- The controls for the climate control are confusing and too low on the dash

- The rear seating is tight for adults on long drives.

A Cross-Generational Discourse by Fleetwood Brougham and Cocoa Efficient

After an over-extended love affair building massive chrome-clad trucks, Lincoln has refocused its efforts on the automobile side of the business. With the LS sedan soon to be history and the aging
Town Car one step away from retirement, Lincoln desperately needs a new car to battle long-time rival Cadillac, as well as the latest competition from Lexus, Audi and BMW. Enter the all-new Zephyr, a modest luxury sedan with a sub-$30,000 price tag and a big dose of Lincoln style

Fleetwood’s’ Take:

As a luxury car, the Zephyr scores decent marks. Its exterior is clean and contemporary with a hefty helping of Lincoln’s trademark styling evident in the polished wheels and shark-gill grille. Though not nearly as bold as the Chrysler 300 C, the Zephyr’s high beltline gives the impression of strength and security. At $29,660, the Zephyr comes well equipped and includes such niceties as a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, heated power operated leather seats, cruise control, side-curtain airbags and automatic climate control. You can add the industry’s only THX audio system, GPS navigation, heated and cooling seats, HID headlights, chrome wheels and power sunroof to bring the total to $35,435. That’s not too shabby when you consider before options, the Lexus ES 330 starts at $32,995 and the Cadillac CTS at $31,235.

Cocoa’s Take:

I had the misfortune of spending an entire day with the old gas bag. Of course I’m referring to Fleetwood, not the Lincoln. There is little joy spending the day with a 60-year old, burrito-eating queen slathered in Grey Flannel. By day’s end, the Zephyr’s new car aroma deteriorated from fresh leather to Georgia pulp mill. On the upside, I regained something I’ve not had since age 16: my gag reflex. Now, about the Lincoln; overall, I like the Zephyr. Its exterior is sharp and clean and the big chrome grille looks particularly menacing. At night, the Zephyr is a beacon of light, with illumination streaming down from below the side mirrors to show you where not to step. The car behaves like a perfect gentleman, unlike someone I know. The Zephyr’s big butt is a bit high, making it tough to see what’s behind you when backing up, but what the hell, that’s why we pay for insurance, right?

Fleetwood’s Take:

Lincoln chose the Ford Fusion as the template for its newest luxury sedan. It’s a good choice in as far as the Fusion is roomy, stylish and handles well. Though the roomy and stylish part has made the leap without damage, the handling part missed the boat. Where the Fusion feels taut and connected, the Zephyr’s luxury suspension and steering feel vague, with too much body roll when pushed hard. In straight-line driving, the Zephyr delivers a smooth and controlled ride making it an excellent highway cruiser. I found the Zephyr’s 3.0-liter V6 engine provides enough power to move the car briskly, but lacks the strong mid-range punch needed for passing at high speeds. It also sends noticeable vibration through the pedals and steering wheel at idle. The six-speed automatic, on the other hand, performs admirably, delivering seamless shifts at just the right moment.

Cocoa’s Take:

Again, Mr. “nothing’s ever good enough for me” strikes again. The Zephyr is not a sports sedan, but its handling is more than adequate for highway onramps and sudden sharp curves. The steering is a bit heavy, a trait most noticeable when parallel parking. I found the V6 to have plenty of pep, but I must agree with Fleetwood that it’s not as refined as a Lexus or Audi V6. I noticed an audible dose of clatter and whine at idle, and there was a tiny vibration felt in the pedals and steering column. In any case, it will all be a moot point as rumor has it Lincoln plans to drop a new, more powerful 3.5-liter V6 into the Zephyr mid way through the 2006 production run.

Fleetwood’s Take:

Inside, Lincoln’s attempt at luxury runs hot and lukewarm. The Zephyr’s interior is nicely designed, with a dual-cowl dash and real maple trim. White LEDs serve as the backlighting and look particularly sharp at night. My big butt found the seating firm and comfortable, and the heating and cooling features worked flawlessly. The radio and headlight switches are easy to see and operate, but the heating controls are too low and difficult to read in bright daylight. Rear seat legroom is above average for this class, as is trunk room.

Cocoa’s Take:

Somebody take Truman Capote to the optometrist. Yes, the pictographs on the heating controls are too small and the LED on/off indicator lights wash out in bright sunlight, but most people quickly familiarize themselves with these controls after just a few weeks. Personally, I love the Zephyr’s interior. The materials are first rate and the dual-cowl dash, chrome door handles and wood trim exude the feeling of Jackie-0 elegance. Where’s my pill-box hat, damn it! The white LED’s in the dash are just gorgeous to view at night and are easy on the eyes. Careful of the rear seat overhead dome light, though. It’s so bright I nearly fried a retina.

Fleetwood’s Take:

The bottom line is I like the Zephyr, but I don’t love it. It’s not that I’m another foreign car snob bashing American cars; quite the contrary. My love affair with Lincoln goes back decades. But in my eyes Lincoln should be the preeminent American luxury car. Lincoln cars should be bold and sophisticated and uniquely American, just like the old Continentals and Marks of the past. What Lincoln has given us in the Zephyr is nice car, but not a great one. And though I can see it parked in the driveways of any number of hard-working, upward climbing Americans, I just can’t see it in mine.

Cocoa’s Take:

Oh for God’s sake, Fleetwood, get your head (and your wardrobe) out of the past. You want every Lincoln to be a classic 1966 Continental. But that’s waxing romantic. The ‘66 Lincoln handled like a pig in heels, had a nice metal dashboard to smash your face against in an accident and was saddled with ‘suicide’ doors. They didn’t call them that for nothing, you Old Spice wearing homo! The Zephyr is fine piece of work. It’s an entry-level Lincoln with a big dose of style, luxury and safety. Any car that’s not good enough to grace Fleetwood’s trailer-park home drive is certainly more than welcome in mine. Go test drive the Zephyr, I’m sure you’ll be impressed

Lincoln is a gay-friendly company.
