2015 Scion FR-S Is A Great Hipster Sportscar, Little Else

2015 Scion FR-SIn short, the 2015 Scion FR-S is a sporty little coupe that is affordable and attractive and looks like a pretty sporty, peppy car, one that will impress friends and the occasional vagrant that one often sees in a hip urban neighborhood. The key word in that last sentence is ‘looks’ – in reality, the 2015 Scion FR-S is not a very peppy car and the interior leaves a bit to be desired. But for a little over $26,000, it’s not a bad little two-door, manual shifting rev-‘em-up kind of car that ‘looks’ like it’s got a bit of a roar to it.

A manual transmission is standard for the FR-S, the reason being that when you can shift the gears of a car, you can better control all the ‘power’ that the engine may unleash. Not to worry in this case. The engine is a 2.0 liter 200-horses inline-four engine – not exactly a pistol, even when you can personally choreograph the gear shifting. Still, the ride was clean and smooth. Handling is wonderful, allowing the driver to not have to pay too much attention to the condition of the road, something always of concern with low-sitting vehicles.

2015 Scion FR-SMileage is good, coming in at 22 city / 30 highway, and that is some of the best in the class, though a manual transmission helps goose those numbers a bit.

I have mixed feeling on the interior. While acceptable and even a bit stylish depending on where you sit, there was nothing overwhelming or underwhelming about it. The trend in car interiors nowadays is to go a smidge beyond basic black, something with a hint of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the new Sia album cover (and one big over-the-top Amy Winehouse hairdo). If anything, the biggest drawback to the interior is the limited interior room. This is a two-door coupe, mind you, meaning your friends will need to be limber enough to climb in the backseat and maneuver as needed to get comfortable. The car sits low so everyone will naturally feel ever bump and grind that those unfinished city roads have to offer. Further, trunk space is, how shall we say, limited, and for you drag queens, getting one show’s worth of gowns, wigs and heels in the trunk might not happen, especially if your portable dressing room also contains a full bar

2015 Scion FR-SThere is, however, something to be said for having a sporty-looking car that doesn’t cost you a fortune and is reliable. Indeed, the FR-S is a reliable little car, one in which you can feel safe. At my age, I need all the practicality that I can get, so I am a bit biased against cars with just two doors – makes it harder for a fat ass like mine to get in and out with minimal joint pain. Still, look at all these photos of this beautiful car. The 2015 FR-S looks good wherever you go, and parking it in tight urban areas where all your neighbors are also living off inherited wealth is a breeze.

Just remember that in this car, you will effectively be smaller and shorter than every other vehicle on the road, even the Smart Cars. Your vision will be limited and your fun may not double, especially if you run over a pet named Flossie. But who cares? You are out and proud without a sense of how it would look to all the faithful who still pray for your soul every Sunday morning….

Your FR-S may be small-statured, but there is never a good reason for being small-minded.

Can I get an Amen?
