Detroit Auto Show Report

Musings From MoTown

We’ve arrived in Motor City for the North American International Auto Show and have decided to try something different. Rather than wait to produce an article after the fact, we are going to give you daily updates on the show as we see it. Don’t worry, we’ll still publish a Top 10 Vehicles article with photos and well-thought-out commentary. This entry will be more of a report on daily events, parties, cute models and yes, CELEBRITIES. It is posted in reverse chronological order.

GM Silverado and Gay Automotive Journalists

G.L.A.M. was wonderful. Thank you to Frank Markus and his partner for a wonderful event. It has taken us two days but we finally feel human. Now that the show is over, it is time to reflect. Our daily coverage wasn’t what we expected it to be but we promise, it will get better. The Top 10 Article is ready and is scheduled to go live tonight. The photo you see above is of the gay auto journalists we traveled the show with standing on the most butch vehicle we could find – the winner of the North American International Auto Show “Truck of the Year” – the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado.

Tuesday, January 9, 2007 – End of the Day
The Malibu reveal was great and if the crowd around the vehicle was any indication of its future success, GM has a winner on its hands. We even witnessed Chris Bangle from BMW checking out the interior design! Leaps and bounds ahead of the current Malibu, this strong entry into the mid-size segment will surprise and delight with features and great design at an affordable price. They described it as a car that looks like $40K but costs half as much. Think Target on wheels and you get the idea. We PROMISE more photos tomorrow. Off to a party for GLBT auto professionals who we’re calling G.L.A.M. – Gay and Lesbian Automotive Mafia.

After another action-packed day on the floor at Cobo Hall here in Detroit, your Gaywheels.com reporters danced the night away (again). We are on our way to the reveal of the new Malibu. Watch it live or catch the show at your leisure via the video below.

Cadillac showed us the new CTS this morning and it was quite a show. Watch this video and check out the two violinists, they are truly amazing. Of course the star of the show is the new CTS, which is stunning. Still working on the photography bug but a quick trip to kinkos should fix that.

We are experiencing some technical difficulties and won’t be able to share the photos we took yesterday until a bit later. The show continues to amaze and delight. Gorgeous sheet metal, thousands of car industry folk and the occasional piece of eye candy. Hands down favorite to date is the male model at the Maserati stand. Laird Hamilton, the HOTTIE pro surfer, was in attendance as well. No complaints from us!
We’ve been hosted by the diversity PR team from GM and they are certainly taking care of us. We have a troup of 6 gay auto journalist walking the show from various publications. In addition to sharing a love of all things automotive, the running commentary is quite entertaining. We had a photo op on the new Chevy Silverado – winner of North American Truck of the Year. Photo to be posted as soon as possible. Stay tuned

GM Style Event - Mario Lopez and the Editor of Gaywheels.com

GM threw a party in Motown featuring Stars and Cars. The celebrities were hot but the cars stole the spotlight. As a new friend from LA stood in awe when the new Camaro Convertible received a standing ovation, I reminded him “Honey, this ain’t Tinseltown, this is Motown. The car is always the star here!”
With that said, we didn’t turn down the opportunity to take a photo with Dancing With the Stars hottie Mario Lopez. To be honest, it was difficult to decide which to focus on; Mario or the LeSabre concept from the 50’s that was on the red carpet. In the end the Latin biceps won our attention-for the time being. During the event itself, the cars got our attention, with the Camaro convertible being hands-down the bell of the ball. Take some time and watch the video for more detailed coverage. Remember to check back in for daily updates from Detroit!

GM Style Event

GM is having a party Hollywood style on the banks of the Detroit river and we will be there, suffering through the free drinks, hot cars and celebrity sitings. With luck, we may get a photo op with one of the following:

Carmen Electra, Mario Lopez, Cheryl Hines, Jennifer Hudson, Christian Slater, Vivica A. Fox, Petra Nemcova, Danny Masterson, Kristen Bell, Nick Cannon, CariDee, Laird Hamilton, Minka Kelly, Rosie Perez, Gabrielle Reese, Ashley Scott , Rachel Zoe

The party starts at 7 PM EST today (January 6th). If you want to watch it live, you can do so below or at GM’s web site, http://www.gm.com. If you miss the live presentation can click and view on-demand replays any time. We’ll be adding our commentary after the fact, assuming the drinks don’t flow too freely 🙂

  1. Why no pictures of Nick? Please tell me his favorite car was the new CTS. I can see Mario, all young and hot in a Camaro, but Nick, oh Nick needs the CTS…Hot men in Hot cars, what else is there in life?

  2. Super blog posts. Glad you are enjoying the events at Cobo. Is the 2008 Chevy Malibu as hot in person as it is the pix posted on the Detroit News? Too many cars, too little time. Thanks for sharing.
