If you didn’t believe there were LGBT Transformers fans, think again. Meet Travis D. Bone. He’s a 34 year-old, Los Angeles resident who not only has a tattoo of an Autobot on his shoulder and more than one thousand Transformer action figures in his collection, he also proudly attended this year’s Transformers convention. And believe it or not, all fans (straight or LGBT) are known as “Transfans.” Here’s a confession of the ultimate Transfan…

Confessions of a Transfan

Or, How I Learned to Fall In Love With a Car
By Travis D. Bone
Growing up there were two things that I loved…. Cars and robots. So in 1984 it’s not really surprising that when I heard about these new toys that were cars that turned into robots I was immediately obsessed. They were called Transformers. Robots in disguise. More than meets the eye. Yes, I am giving you every Transformer slogan and cliché in the book right now.
I’m trying to get them out of my system.
But here is the thing. For me, they weren’t just toy cars. Trust me, I had Hot Wheels and I loved them. I also had action figures that I loved. But Transformers? They were a bit of both and to this day I am still fascinated by them. I guess I am a big kid and I still love my toys. Their design and the creativity behind them have kept me entertained in ways that I can’t even begin to explain. Over the last 25 years I have continued to collect them. However, when the Transformers movie came out two years ago my appreciation for them took on a whole new meaning.

It was like something I loved had been grown up and brought into the “real world” for me. I walked out of the theater wanting the ultimate adult toy… The Chevy Camaro. At the time the first movie came out, it just a concept car but now it’s available to the public.
I can honestly say I have never fallen in love with a car before. I want to compare it to the experience that Shia LaBeouf’s Sam had in the movie. He got the car that he wanted, a 1976 Chevy Camaro, but didn’t see it for what it really was at first. Then when he learned that it was really an alien robot from outer space? Then it Transformed into the 2010 Camaro and became the car of his dreams.
I thought my interest in the Camaro was just a temporary infatuation. Sports cars, muscle cars and roadsters have never really worked for me. At 6’4” I have never been very comfortable in one and I have always ended up driving SUVs. But in April, when I had the chance to get behind the wheel of one of the new Camaros I jumped at it. The first thing I realized when I sat down in the 2010 Camaro was that I wanted to own this car in a way that I have never wanted to own a car before.
It was love at first sight and when I sat down in the driver’s seat, I have never felt more at home in a sports car. It felt like this car was built for me and now my only problem is that toys I want aren’t so easy for me to put on the credit card and pay off at the end of the month.
So when was the last time you fell in love with a car? Just maybe one of the new stars of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen could be the car you have been looking for. And luckily, the 2010 Camaro is already on dealer lots and ready for my driveway.
