We Didn’t Say It – Dodge Did

Did Dodge come out of the closet?

We here at Gaywheels.com get queried constantly about what makes a car “gay.” Whether in person at a press event or on radio and telephone interviews, the question inevitably comes up. Our standard answer is, we don’t go there. It’s not up to us to qualify a car as “gay.” Instead, we provide information on whether the company that makes the vehicles as gay-friendly.

I’m on record saying that a car is an extension of your personality and says a lot about you, straight or gay. I also remind people that perception is related to the context of the message. For example, the Mazda MX-5 is an awesome enthusiast’s car, so a man driving it on the weekend with his wife sends out a different message than if a shirtless guy is cruising down Santa Monica Blvd. playing dance music. The car isn’t gay or lesbian, the owner is.
It seems that the marketing folks at Dodge disagree. In the course of posting and reviewing content on Gaywheels.com and our MySpace page, we noticed an interesting ad served up by Google. As you can see above and to the right, Dodge has an ad out that simply says “Gay Car” and then a link to their site.
While it is important to have a catchy title to your text ads, we are wondering if Dodge is making a not-so-subtle statement or simply appealing to the people that believe a car makes you gay.
