Full disclosure: I’m a vegan. A casual one, but a vegan nonetheless. One of the reasons I’m not a super-duper serious vegan (whatever that is) is because I know there are certain times, certain occasions when I’m going to fail at that.
I’m going to have to eat a few spoonfuls of my mom’s soup, which she lovingly made with chicken stock. I’m going to have to buy a friend a bottle of perfume that he really, really wants, even though it was undoubtedly tested on animals. I also spend a fair bit of time driving and reviewing vehicles with leather seats.
Last September, a couple of well-heeled Tesla fans asked the automaker to offer vegan-friendly leatherette on its new models. Frankly, I didn’t think that the company would comply — at least not in my lifetime — but like other assumptions I’d made about, say, marriage equality and the continued use of Twitter, I was clearly being far too pessimistic:
For the eco-conscious car buyer, Tesla’s luxury electric vehicles, with their neck-snapping acceleration, are proof that performance doesn’t have to be sacrificed at the altar of saving the environment.
But for some discerning consumers, there is a nagging problem. The leather in the seats and steering wheel requires slaughtering animals, and the cloth substitute doesn’t quite measure up for a vehicle that can cost more than $100,000.
Now, in response, comes the Tesla that even a luxury-minded vegan could love.
Synthetic leather, in a shade Tesla calls Ultra White, is available as an option for the new Model X sport utility vehicle.
