Few model introductions receive more attention than the full-size pickups from GM, Ford and Ram, so the first look at the redesigned 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a big deal. Millions will be built. Memories will be made. Many will be handed down through generations. New forms, engines, and screens will become familiar.
“Silverado has earned truck customers’ trust over decades of hard work in the real world,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet. “With the Next-Generation 2027 Silverado 1500, we’re taking that legacy forward by building the most capable, refined and advanced Silverado lineup we’ve ever offered.”
Even with a stronger stance, refined face and upscale style, the Silverado is instantly recognizable. Most of the weird creases and curves of the last generation have been scrubbed away in return for wider chiseled fenders and trim-specific details. Squinty LED headlamps, C-shaped driving lamps, and spider taillamps connect Silverado to Chevy’s crossovers.
“The goal with the new Silverado was to create a truck that looks stronger, more modern with demanding presence at first glance, while staying true to the authentic truck character customers expect from Chevrolet,” Chevrolet Global Executive Design Director Phil Zak added.
Wall-to-wall screens bring technology to everyone. You can’t miss the 16.3-inch center infotainment screen nor the crisp 12.2-inch driver center. Both are joined by a wide head-up display and, on ZR2 and High Country trims, a 11.5-inch front passenger “co-pilot” screen. The rearview camera mirror adds one more. In all, customers will tap up to 60-inches of digital displays and available dual wireless charging pads.
And they’re are awash in luxuries. Hands-off SuperCruise includes trailering capability for low stress hauling. Check options for heated and ventilated seats, dual-pane moonroof, real wood veneers and sweet soft leather.
While horsepower and torque figures have not been released, the new Silverado will be powered by new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8 engines – both building on the Corvette’s LS6 6.7-liter V8. An enhanced 2.7-liter four-cylinder with best-in-class standard torque and 3.0-liter turbo-diesel remain for those who covet efficiency with capability.
“We pushed these engines through an extensive testing and validation process to make sure they deliver the durability, capability and dependability Silverado customers expect,” said Mark Dickens, executive chief engineer. “From tough towing scenarios to the daily demands our customers put on their trucks, these next-generation V8s were engineered and proven to perform in the real world.”
As before, Silverado models range from the basic Work Truck to the ZR2 off-road package with 35-inch tires, 2-inch lift and dynamic dampers. If that’s all too far, go for the Trail Boss or luxury-oriented High Country. Most buyers will choose lower trims, but Chevrolet demonstrates what it can do.
Whether it’s the rounded post-war 1948, exuberant 1957 Cameo Carrier, 1970s/80s square bodies, 1988 aero models or 2007 redesign that brought us to the modern age, we all have our favorites. While my dad’s green 1978 Chevy pickup with a Pioneer tape player was held together by rust and spiderwebs, it was the first vehicle I drove on public roads at fifteen. Memories run deep.
Chevrolet pickups are not just ways to commute to work and drop kids at school, though most do. They tow campers for vacations, boats for weekend excursions and lumber for earning livings. A Silverado must be virtually everything to everybody and the 2027 edition should be the most of everything to everybody during its century of heritage.
Prices will be released closer to production beginning later this year, but they should rise only incrementally from current.
Storm Forward!
