Asking Forgiveness is Easier Than Asking Permission
OK….literally…we are in Oklahoma City, OK after a long day of driving. We left Houston, TX this morning right after being handed our clues. The first leg was all about getting OUT of Texas. No offense to our readers in Houston but that city is big, crowded and HOT. We weren’t sad to head north and see more greenery and character to the landscape. Despite an unscheduled meeting with a Texas state trooper, with Evan behind the wheel we made it to OKC in record time.
Up to today, we’ve been playing the game by the rules and doing our best not to speed excessively or do anything too stupid. Unfortunately, our fellow competitors have found every loophole in the rule book and have been gathering points at a much faster clip than little ‘ol Team G.L.A.M. So, my co-driver, being the competitive individual that he is, decided to play with the big boys and go head to head with some very fanatical players.
I am too tired to go into all the details but we SHOULD have been in the top 10 today. Instead, we ended up in the bottom 15. This was no fault of Evan’s driving, the Saab’s abilities or if I may say so myself, my abilities as co-driver and navigator. Rather. it was a combination of first-year-event design and a last-minute panic that caused us to forget some key items when we checked in. Let me just say one thing; you know when you see those contestants on the Amazing Race and you wonder why they are screaming at each other when it all seems so easy? I can attest to the absolute insanity that kicks in when two grown men start screaming at each other and you simply want to get to the finish line. Tempers flare, items are dropped and then all rational thought goes out the window. The beers were well earned this evening.
You may note that we don’t have any photos today. We were so crazy we simply didn’t take any. I wanted to snap a photo of the Texas trooper but I wasn’t exactly sure what he was saying/mumbling and I didn’t want to upset him. I SHOULD have taken a photo of the statue at the National Cowboy museum but again, we were in such a adrenaline-induced rush that those thoughts never entered my mind. We’ll do better tomorrow, I promise.
