On Tuesday night, the auto industry made quite a splash at the 2012 GLAAD Amplifier Awards.
Auto insurer Allstate took home gold in the Digital Advertising category for its “Equality Is ______” campaign. And as we mentioned yesterday on the Gaywheels Facebook page, Chevrolet nabbed a trophy for its acclaimed “Mom, Dad, I’m Electric” ad, which tied for first place in the LGBT Advertising category with spot from Lexus that ran in The Advocate‘s 45th anniversary issue.
But Lexus isn’t stopping there — in fact, the luxury automaker is now working with OUT to celebrate that magazine’s 20th anniversary. (We smell a theme.)
This month, OUT is publishing a 20th Anniversary Collector’s Issue, with Lexus in the role of presenting sponsor. And next Tuesday, October 9, Lexus gets top billing again at the OUT 20th Anniversary Presented by Lexus, which is described as “a VIP celebration being held at W Hollywood’s exclusive outdoor oasis, Station Hollywood”. Sadly, the party isn’t open to the public — or us — but if any of you go, feel free to send over some scandalous behind-the-scenes photos. (Nude royalty is preferred, but we’re not picky. Well, not very.)
And as if that weren’t enough, Lexus is also sponsoring a section on OUT’s website devoted to highlights of the past 20 years in LGBT news. If you’ve got some spare time this afternoon, take a few minutes to stroll down memory lane. Or, if you’re on the young side, do a little research into America’s LGBT history.
Congrats to Lexus and to all the forward-thinking winners at the GLAAD Amplifier Awards. Perhaps in time, companies like these will drag folks like Dan Cathy kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
Lagniappe: Speaking of LGBT-friendly ads, if you haven’t yet watched this clip from Expedia, minimize that spreadsheet and do so, pronto. It’s not auto-related, but it’s well, well worth three minutes of your time.
